Commission an Advanced Gateway

The GoBright Advanced Gateway is a powerful hardware component designed to provide reliable communication between GoBright devices and the cloud platform. It enables seamless connectivity and efficient data exchange, supporting a stable smart workplace environment.

With its advanced capabilities, the Advanced Gateway ensures smooth operation of connected devices and helps organizations manage their workplace solutions effectively.

*The small antenna is used for Wi-Fi communication at 2.4 GHz and 5GHz.
**The large antenna is used for LoRa communication with sensors.

This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to commission the GoBright Advanced Gateway, including the required setup steps to connect and configure the device for use within the GoBright environment.

Requirements

Before commissioning the GoBright Advanced Gateway, make sure the following requirements are available:

  • A configured Advanced Gateway profile (optional)
  • A Commissioning Preset (optional)
  • A user account with administrator rights
  • A mobile phone with the GoBright app version 9.33.3 or higher installed

Learn how to configure an Advanced Gateway profile and create Commissioning Presets by following the steps from the drop-down menus.

  1. 1. Advanced Gateway profile

The Advanced Gateway profile can be configured in the GoBright portal. Navigate to Settings > Devices > Profiles and select 'Add' to create a new profile.

Enter the required details, such as the Profile Name, and select Advanced Gateway as the device type, and then Save the new profile.

Note: If no Advanced Gateway profile is created manually, a default profile will be generated automatically during the commissioning process.

2. Commissioning Preset

After creating the Advanced Gateway profile, you can optionally create a Commissioning Preset to simplify and standardize the installation process.

Navigate to Settings > Devices > Commissioning Presets and select 'Add' to create a new preset.

Configure the required settings:

  • Name - Enter a clear and recognizable name for the preset.
  • Type - Select Advanced Gateway.
  • Profile - Select the Advanced Gateway profile to be applied or choose the profile during installation.
  • Ethernet connection - ON/OFF - Enable or disable the Ethernet connection.
  • Wi-Fi connection - ON/OFF - Enable or disable Wi-Fi. When enabled, configure the required Wi-Fi settings.
  • NTP settings - Choose between automatic NTP configuration or enter a manual NTP server (for example: pool.ntp.org).

Once saved, the Commissioning Preset can be used during the commissioning process to quickly apply the predefined configuration to the Advanced Gateway.

Activate and commission the Advanced Gateway

Once the needed requirements are completed, you can proceed with activating and commissioning the Advanced Gateway using the GoBright mobile app. The app will guide you through the commissioning process and allow you to apply the required configuration settings to the device.

Follow the steps below to activate the Advanced Gateway and complete the commissioning process using the GoBright mobile app.

3. Power On the Advanced Gateway

Connect the Advanced Gateway to a power source to start the device. Wait until the device has fully powered on and is ready for commissioning before continuing with the setup process in the GoBright mobile app.

  1.  Ensure the switch on top of the Advanced Gateway is set away from 'BOOT' before powering on the device.

  2. Power the Advanced Gateway using one of the following options:
  • PoE+ (30W) connection via the ETH0 port. The required connector is included in the package.
  • External power supply connected to the 2-pin green power connector. This connector is not included in the package and must be purchased separately.

               Red = +                        Black = -

3. The gateway will start booting.

  • Boot time is approximately 70 seconds.
  • During startup, the LEDs will display various colors and flashing patterns.

Wait until the User LED (3rd from above) on the device starts blinking blue slowly.
This indicates that the gateway is in Bluetooth Discovery Mode and ready to commission.

Important: Discovery Mode remains active for approximately 10 minutes.

The USER LED indicates the current status of the Advanced Gateway. The possible LED statuses are listed below:

LED color LED Indication Action
Solid green Device is operating normally
Orange slow blink Device is booting
Blue slow blink Device is ready for commissioning
Solid blue Commissioning is in progress
Cyan slow blink Cloud or IoT Hub connection issue
Magenta slow blink Network connection issue
Red fast blink Critical failure or hardware related error path
Loading bar animation OTA update or decommissioning process in progress

4. Open the GoBright Mobile App

  1. Open the GoBright Mobile app and log in with an account that has Administrator rights. Navigate to: Settings → Admin tools (three stripes).

2. From here, you can continue with the Advanced Gateway commissioning process.

3. Select GoBright Advanced Gateways (beta)

4. Select Commission a Gateway by QR Code.

5. Choose one of the following options:

  • Select a predefined Commissioning Preset (created in step 2 of this article), or
  • Select No Preset to configure the device manually.

6. Press Next to continue.

7. Scan the QR code located on the sticker of the Advanced Gateway. If prompted, click on 'Pair' to allow the GoBright app to access Bluetooth and communicate with nearby devices to continue the commissioning process.

8. Configure the Advanced Gateway settings

Fill in the filed for the Gateway name and select a preferred profile. If you have selected a predefined Commissioning preset (Step 2 - Commissioning presets), the other fields will be already completed. If not, you can fill in these fields manually.

Available settings:

  • Gateway Name – Enter a recognizable name for the device.
  • Preferred Profile – Select the profile to be applied to the Advanced Gateway.
  • Connection Type – Select the required connection method:
    • Ethernet
    • Wi-Fi
  • Wi-Fi Settings (when Wi-Fi is selected):
    • SSID – Enter the network name.
    • Password – Enter the Wi-Fi password.
  • NTP Server – Select the time synchronization method:
    • Automatic
    • Manual – Enter the required NTP server address.

9. Once all settings have been configured, select Commission device to start the commissioning process.

10. Automatic Commissioning Process - The app will automatically perform the following four steps to complete the commissioning process:

Each step is automatically checked and confirmed with a green checkmark when completed successfully. Once all steps are completed, press Done to finish the commissioning process.

Commissioning Complete

After successful commissioning, the Advanced Gateway will be visible in both the GoBright Mobile App and the GoBright Portal.

The following steps explain how to locate the Advanced Gateway and what information is available about it.

GoBright Mobile App

Navigate to: Settings → Admin Tools → GoBright Advanced Gateways (beta) → GoBright Advanced Gateways

In the GoBright mobile app you can only see the following information:

  • Serial Number
  • Gateway Name
  • Selected Profile

GoBright Portal

Navigate to: Settings → Devices → Gateways

The device will be listed with the device type Advanced Gateway.

In the GoBright portal, the following information is available for the commissioned Advanced Gateway:

  • Serial Number
  • Gateway Name
  • Selected Profile
  • Application Version (Firmware) and
  • Firmware OTA (Over-the-Air) Update Options
  • Connection Status
  • IP Address
  • MAC Address

Mounting

The Advanced Gateway is supplied with a DIN mounting bracket, allowing it to be easily and securely installed on a standard DIN rail. Simply attach the bracket to the gateway (if not pre-installed) and snap the device onto the DIN rail. Ensure the gateway is firmly locked in place before connecting the power supply and network cables.

Recommended Commissioning Order and Advanced Gateway Notes

To ensure a smooth installation process, always commission the Advanced Gateway before commissioning the supported sensors. This prevents unnecessary delays in receiving occupancy data.

When no Gateway is available, sensors enter a sleep mode and only check for a connection every few hours. If the Gateway is active during sensor commissioning, the sensor will immediately start communicating and sending data.

The Advanced Gateway sends sensor status updates to the GoBright Portal backend every 30 seconds.

Note: The switch set to 'BOOT' is intended only for advanced operations, such as flashing firmware through the USB-C port. Do not use this mode during normal operation or commissioning.
